My Alchemy Project started years ago as I was investigating the symbols and glyphs of the ‘language’ of alchemy. These symbols have accumulated over millennia as the shorthand of proto-chemistry. I found a huge tangle of overlapping, contradictory symbols, some nearly impossible to read. Since I couldn’t discover anything resembling a ‘standard’ way of writing these symbols – they are almost always handwritten – I decided to try to create a kind of font, if you will, that would somewhat standardize many of the symbols I found most visually interesting. I feel a kind of archetypal process at work here, in which some basic human imagery is incorporated into these glyphs. I wish Dr. Carl Jung could comment on this! In all, I designed about 200 glyphs, then decided to paint some of them in curious ways.
